Summer Self-Care: How to Enjoy the Season’s Energy Without Burning Yourself Out
After the months of movement, growth, and transformation of Spring, there comes a moment when the days grow even warmer and the light seems to take up even more space, and the desire to go out, meet people, experience new things, travel, create, celebrate, or simply enjoy life a little more may begin to grow.
If you are living through this moment, which may begin around November/December in the Southern Hemisphere or May/June in the Northern Hemisphere, this is my first invitation to you:
Pause for a moment and feel the atmosphere around you. Feel how your body responds to the heat, the light, the movement, and the stimulation. And most of all, notice: How is your energy right now? Do you feel good? Does it feel expansive? Restless? Tired? Full of desire and motivation? Or perhaps already a little overwhelmed?
Just feel, without analyzing too much or getting lost in your thoughts. Take a deep breath and let whatever comes up flow. You do not need to decide immediately what to do with this energy and/or feeling. It is simply a reminder for you to begin to notice how it is showing up within you and how you are feeling today.
Summer Also Begins Slowly…
When we think about Summer, our minds often go straight to holidays, travel, the beach, parties, gatherings, movement, fun, and a life happening outside.
And yes, all of that can absolutely be part of it. But when we begin to think about summer self-care, we may need to go back to a moment before all of that… to the very end of Spring. To what you felt you wanted to focus on, what felt aligned for you, and what you want to see shine this Summer… starting from within.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Summer is traditionally associated with the Fire element and with a more Yang, active, warm, and expansive energy. And Fire can bring more energy, but it can also burn or wear you down if it is not well directed. This season is also associated with the Heart and with themes such as movement, connection, and expression.
So, as a form of self-care, revisit your desires and how you want to use this energy so that excess does not end up consuming you. And to begin reflecting on — or simply feeling into — that, these questions may help:
- Do I truly have more energy, or am I simply surrounded by more stimulation?
- Do I actually feel like going out more?
- Do I want to be around more people, or spend more time on my own?
- Is my body asking for movement or rest?
- What is genuinely bringing me pleasure?
- What experiences do I truly want to have this Summer?
- Is there anything I am doing only because it feels like I “should be making the most of it”?
You do not need to have all the answers or ask yourself every question. Choose the ones that feel most meaningful to you and notice that there is a big difference between living fully and simply filling your life with even more stimulation because of Summer’s energy. Keep observing yourself.
Pleasure Can Also Be a Form of Self-Care
Another theme and invitation of Summer to feel and experience is joy and pleasure.
And they do not need to come from big experiences. The real invitation is to find those sensations and feelings in the small things, such as: feeling the sun on your skin for a few minutes, stepping into the sea, eating something light that you enjoy, listening to music, dancing, meeting someone who makes you feel good, laughing, travelling, or something even simpler: noticing that you are present enough to enjoy something while it is happening.
Sometimes, we think so much about self-care as something we do to fix or adjust something… resting because we are tired, slowing down because we are overwhelmed, organizing because everything feels out of place… that we forget that care can also exist simply because something brings us pleasure and joy.
So, if I had to choose one reflective question for Summer for you, it would be: What makes you feel alive?
Not what may look beautiful from the outside, in photos, or make sense to someone else… but what truly makes something light up, shine, and pulse… within you.
No matter how small, simple, or perhaps fleeting it may be… it makes you feel alive and happy. Summer invites you to answer that question and live your answer, little by little, without rushing.
Summer Self-Care Ideas
Summer Self-Care goes far beyond maintaining balance, staying hydrated, and opening yourself to joy. It is also a time to care for your inner warmth, your heart, your throat, your expression, and your relationships. This selection of activities is already a beautiful place to begin.
You can:
- Spend more time outdoors
- Go for walks or do activities at more comfortable times of day
- Swim or spend some time near the water
- Spend time with people who genuinely make you feel good
- Take short trips or discover a new place
- Create moments to dance, listen to music, or move your body
- Choose lighter meals and remember to stay hydrated
- Create a small self-care ritual after a very full day
- Keep some evenings or periods of time free from commitments
- Try a new activity
- Spend a few minutes simply feeling the sun, the wind, or the water
- Do something simply because it brings you pleasure and joy
- Notice where you may need to create stronger boundaries
- Write about what you want to live and experience during the season
- Create moments of quiet even on busy days
- Notice when it is time to go out… and when it is time to come back home
Choose what makes sense for you and for the moment you are living through. Definitely, you do not need to do everything. Choose what can truly bring you pleasure, joy, presence, and energy, and let the rest pass by.
Keep observing yourself, month after month, because you change, the season changes, and what feels delightful and brings you joy in December may no longer feel right in January.
And yes… you can change, transform, and live unique moments alongside Summer.
