Winter Self-Care: How to Slow Down, Turn Inward, and Strengthen Your Foundations

After months of change, letting go, and slowing down throughout Autumn, there comes that moment when the temperature begins to drop… and we may start to feel a desire for a little more quiet… and that feeling may begin to appear in a subtle way or feel very clear.

If you are living through this moment and still haven’t noticed it, this is my first invitation to you:

Feel the atmosphere around you. Feel your body. Notice whether there is something within you asking for less. Less stimulation. Less movement. Less rushing.

Breathe deeply… gently… and stay with yourself, noticing how you feel, for a few moments.

And then notice: How are you arriving into this Winter?

You may already feel like turning inward… or you may still be living at a different pace. And if you are, that’s completely okay too!

I simply invite you to notice that… as this change of season unfolds, that desire may begin to appear.

It may show up as a desire to go to bed a little earlier. To prepare a warm drink just for yourself. To spend a little more time quietly. To create a cozier little corner in your home. To reduce some of your commitments. To think and reflect. To write. To spend a little more time on your own. Or simply to feel that you need more space for yourself.

And all of this can happen gradually too…

Winter Begins Slowly…

You will probably come across many articles describing Winter as a season of turning inward, rest, and introspection… and it can really bring all of that… and so much more!

But, when it comes to winter self-care, I invite you to be careful not to turn that desire into yet another list of things you should feel or do (that would be the opposite of what this season is inviting you to experience). Especially if you are still at the beginning of the season, such as May/June in the Southern Hemisphere or November/December in the Northern Hemisphere.

At this moment, my suggestion is to first allow yourself to notice whether something is actually changing within you and what you would like… or are able… to do in response to it.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Winter is associated with the Water element and with the Kidneys and Bladder, within a traditional perspective that connects this season with more inward movement, the conservation of energy, and introspection. And one of the most beautiful things about this perspective is that it reminds us that not every moment needs to be about expansion. There are times to grow, times to preserve, to nourish, to rest, and to strengthen what lies beneath everything you want to build later… your foundations, your inner world, your roots, and your values.

So, instead of entering Winter thinking immediately about everything you need to change, improve, or prepare, try setting aside a little time to answer these questions and observe yourself:

  • Is your body asking for more rest?
  • Is your routine fuller than you would like it to be?
  • Is there any area of your life that needs more stability?
  • Are you able to have moments of quiet?
  • What do you really need to feel supported and cared for at this moment and during this Winter?
  • Is there anything you could simplify?
  • What would you like to nourish over the next few months?

You do not need to answer everything, or have all the answers right now. Perhaps just one of these questions is enough to show you where your self-care can begin.

Choose one or two things. Notice what genuinely feels good for you, what your body is asking for, and what is possible within the life you are living right now.

And allow your Winter to have its own rhythm.

Not All Rest Needs to Be Earned

Sometimes, we become so used to living in constant motion and feeling both internal and external pressure to be productive that even rest begins to feel like something we need to justify.

“I’ll rest when I finish this.” “I’ll slow down after this week.” “Once everything is organized, I’ll take some time for myself.” And then, something else always seems to come up, and rest never really arrives… or when it does, it is less than what we actually need.

Winter can be a beautiful time to notice what this relationship looks like for you… the relationship between you and rest, between your need to rest and the feeling that you first have to deserve it. Start with this question:

  • Can you rest before you reach your limit? Can you take a break because you notice that you need one, rather than because your body can no longer keep going?

Taking a break or resting does not need… and should not need… to happen only during your holidays. It can also be made of small moments throughout your days and weeks. Gently and without pressure.

In a way that allows you to give rest a real place within your routine, rather than letting it become whatever is left after everything else.

Your moments of rest can look like: pausing to look at the view, lying on the sofa or in a hammock for five minutes, sleeping a little longer, having an evening with no commitments, reducing the number of things you try to fit into the same day, or simply leaving some empty spaces unfilled, allowing them to flow and giving your schedule… and yourself… room to breathe.

Slowing down a little will not make you stop. It can help you feel stronger.

This way, you can find a rhythm that allows you to keep living, creating, and doing what you need to do… without moving away from yourself in the process.

Before You Bloom Again, Care for Your Foundations

If Spring often reminds us of growth and new movement, Winter can offer a different invitation and opportunity: to look at what supports all of it.

Your foundations. The things that offer you safety, stability, rest, structure, and a sense of belonging. And it does not need to become a huge or existential reflection. It can begin somewhere very concrete, with questions like these:

  • How are your sleep, home, body, and routine?
  • Do you feel like you have enough time to rest?
  • Are there people you feel safe with?
  • Have you been able to care for your most basic needs?
  • What is supporting you right now?
  • Where would I like to feel more safety or stability?
  • What needs to be nourished before I think about growing again?
  • What is truly essential to me right now?
  • What foundation would I like to strengthen during this Winter?

You do not need to ask yourself all of these questions or have all the answers right now. Simply notice how your body feels as you ask them and what comes to mind as a possible adjustment or idea. Let it flow.

Sometimes, caring for your foundations does not mean building something new or adding more, but protecting and strengthening what is already important to you.

Winter Self-Care Ideas

There are many simple ways to bring more presence into your winter self-care and connect more deeply with yourself and with the season. I want to leave you with a few simple suggestions that you can bring into your daily life this Winter!

You can:

  • Create a small ritual to slow down at the end of the day
  • Prepare a warm drink and enjoy it without doing anything else at the same time
  • Sleep a little longer when your body asks for it
  • Make one space in your home feel more cozy
  • Reduce some of your commitments, when possible
  • Set aside moments of quiet
  • Choose gentler movement and pay attention to what your body is asking for
  • Write about what you would like to nourish during the season
  • Spend some time outdoors and notice how nature changes throughout Winter
  • Prepare meals that bring a sense of warmth, care, and comfort
  • Review your routine and notice what still makes sense
  • Create screen-free moments or moments with fewer stimuli
  • Organize an area that could bring more calm into your day
  • Spend time with people who bring you a sense of safety and comfort
  • Simply do nothing for a few minutes

Choose the ideas that feel right for you and for the moment you are living through.

There is no need to rush or try to care for everything at once. Winter invites you to look at what is essential to you, at what nourishes and supports you. Feel your body and its need for introspection, the moments of pause and the moments of movement, the times when you want to be on your own and the times when you want to celebrate this comforting season with the people you love.

One of the most beautiful parts of moving through Winter with more presence is being able to care for your foundations… while living with clarity and ease whatever is moving within you.

Would You Like to Move Through Winter with More Presence?

If you would like some support as you observe these changes throughout the season, I invite you to discover the Waves of Winter, by Inmersivas.

Over the course of three months, the Waves accompany you through different moments of the season with quizzes, journals, guides, meditations, reflections, and self-care practices.

In the Waves of Winter, you will deepen your self-care, connect with the season, and explore themes such as rest, turning inward, quiet, introspection, safety, stability, belonging, basic needs, connection with your body, grounding, trust, fear, comfort, nourishment, planning, inner renewal, presence, and strengthening your foundations.

But, more than simply learning about these themes, you will have a space to notice how each one appears within you and decide which of them you truly want to bring into your daily self-care.

You will also experience a unique Winter, care for yourself during this moment and, probably, arrive at the next Spring feeling more rested, nourished, aware of your needs, and with stronger, more cared-for foundations for the new movement of the season.
