Spring Self-Care: How to Move With the Season at Your Own Pace
After months of feeling the cooler weather and the inward rhythm of winter, there comes that moment when the temperature slowly begins to rise, the extra layers of clothing start to come off, and your desire to move, go out, and change something around you… or even something within your own mind… begins to return, subtly or with more intensity.
If you are experiencing this moment and haven’t noticed it yet, this is my first invitation:
Feel the atmosphere around you. Feel something within you that may be different. Feel this moment right now. Take a deep breath. Bring in presence.
How did that feel? Is something new beginning to grow within you?
Maybe yes, or maybe not yet. But as this seasonal transition unfolds, a small desire for movement may also begin to appear.
A desire to walk. To organize a space. To return to a project. To change something. To go out. To create. To meet someone. Or simply that hard-to-explain feeling that you want to start moving again.
And all of this can happen little by little…
Spring begins slowly…
You can find many articles online talking about spring renewal and the beginning of a new cycle… and spring really can be all of that.
But, when it comes to spring self-care, that wouldn’t be the first thing I would tell you… especially if you are still at the beginning of the season, such as August/September in the Southern Hemisphere or February/March in the Northern Hemisphere.
During these months, my suggestion is to allow yourself to feel that small internal shift that may begin slowly.
Some desires or needs beginning to change. A little extra energy. Or even a desire to stay a little longer in the inward rhythm of winter. All of this can be noticed as signals from your body, your current moment, and also the way you are moving through this seasonal transition.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is associated with the Wood element and a more expansive kind of energy, connected with growth, creativity, and the impulse to move in some direction. And when this energy arrives, it can also be important to notice your limits, so you don’t rush yourself by trying to do everything at once.
Allow yourself to bloom in your own time. Try to step away, even a little, from that tendency to see the arrival of spring as a big invitation to restart everything… because that can also place a lot of pressure on this moment. Allow yourself to begin slowly.
You don’t need to decide right away everything you want to do. You can begin by noticing where some movement already exists within you and asking yourself:
- Do I feel like going out more?
- Is my body asking for more movement?
- Is there a project or idea that has started calling my attention again and making me want to take part in it or finish it?
- Is there any part of my home that feels like it could use some renewal?
- Do I feel like discovering somewhere new?
- Do I want to spend more time around other people?
- Do I feel like creating something?
And, of course, you don’t need to ask yourself all of these questions or have all the answers. You can simply let one of them become that initial impulse and begin from there… toward a spring that feels more fluid, gentle, and full of bloom.
Choose one or two things. Notice what feels good and what is enjoyable. If it makes sense, add something else later. And follow your own flow.
Movement also needs direction
- What do I really want to set in motion this spring?
- What would I like to see grow?
- Where do I want to direct this extra energy?
- Is there anything I want to leave behind to make space for this?
- What direction feels most meaningful to me right now?
Spring self-care possibilities
- Spending a little more time outdoors
- Opening the windows and letting in more light
- Gradually returning to moving your body
- Organizing a small area of your home
- Returning to a project that has been on pause
- Trying something new
- Creating, planting
- Spending time with people
- Discovering a new place
- Changing one small thing in your routine
- Writing about what you would like to see grow over the next few months
